As we continue our focus on leading management institutes across the country, we take a look this week at National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Mumbai.

NITIE (NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING) was established by the Government of India in 1963 with assistance of the United Nations Development (UNDP) through the International Labor Organization (ILO). Since its inception, NITIE has been providing solutions to the complex problems of industry and business. Recognized by the AICTE and National Board of Accreditation (NBA), NITIE is one of the 15 centers of excellence established along with the IIT’s and IIM’s by the Government of India.

The Vision statement of the college is “To be a leader in the knowledge led productivity movement.” It was established with the Mission “To nourish a learning environment conducive to foster innovations in productivity and business development.”

The flagship management programme at NITIE, PGDIM (Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Management) aims at inculcating a holistic approach towards business in some of the brightest brains of the country. It provides the right blend of financial, marketing and operational acumen and exposure to the budding managers of tomorrow. Since the last 15 years of its inception, the PGDIM programme has produced many a business stalwart in the industries ranging from FMCG, IT, banking to consulting.

NITIE has one of the toughest selection procedures for admission to its management program. The selection process includes short listing candidates on the basis of CAT scores followed by a round each of group discussion and personal interview. The panellists select the best of the lot from these rounds based on the all round performance of the candidates throughout their professional careers. Over the years, the number of candidates applying to NITIE has risen and so have the CAT score cutoffs as well as admission criteria. NITIE only takes first class engineers for its management course. These students come from diverse backgrounds across Manufacturing, Consulting, Engineering and IT domains. The institute maintains a healthy mix of fresh graduates and people with prior work experience, where each has a chance to learn from the other. While students with work experience bring in with them their knowledge of the industry, students who are straight out of college bring innovation and enthusiasm.

The faculty at NITIE is the hallmark of knowledge, experience and interactive skills. Most have hands-on experience in business, industry or government as well. Their cross-functional knowledge of various aspects of business and continuous involvement in consultancy and management programs makes them the crème de la crème amongst all business schools. A harmonious blend of scholastic acumen and broad range of experience translates into a faculty that is committed to the pursuit of ‘Excellence’, staying ahead of industry trends, solving complex business problems and imparting knowledge to the business leaders of tomorrow. The faculty members actively engage students with case-based curricula, real-world examples and strong academic theories. The faculty at NITIE also actively participates in Management Development Programs (MDP). The Management Development Programme provides training for practising managers, engineers, professionals and administrators. These programs are a way through which the industry benefits from the faculty’s rich experience.

The curriculum of the PGDIM course at NITIE aims at giving the students a holistic learning experience. It ensures that the students have a firm and sound grounding in all the fundamental management concepts before they excel in the electives of their choice. Students at NITIE are exposed to experiential learning innovations right from the first module; activities like Mandi (The street selling exercise) and Hamara Dhanda (Where students are encouraged towards entrepreneurship) stand out in that list. The students undertake two separate internships during the course of their program. The Summer Internship is taken at the end of first year, for a period of 2 months. The Winter Internship is a concept which is unique to NITIE. During winter internship, our students get to work in a company for a period of 16 weeks and put their MBA learning’s into practice. This internship typically is the last module and concludes the academic curriculum at NITIE.

Even though NITIE is synonymous to academic brilliance, life here for the three hundred odd post graduate students isn’t all about studies. The purpose of a residential program is not just to give academic knowledge but rather bring about an overall development of the individual to make him a better manager and a leader. Business events like Prerana, Envision, Litmus and Lakshya, are aimed at providing business excellence. Not only do they form a great learning opportunity but also are a great source of fun where the students work together towards making the event a success. Filled with exciting panel discussions, live corporate case studies with enticing PPI/PPO offers as well as rock shows, Prerana is a management festival which has something for everyone.

NITIE has one of the most beautiful campuses in India. Nestled amongst the lush green hills that extend into North Mumbai and surrounded by water bodies like the Powai and Vihar lakes, the campus is a visual treat. The campus is all uphill from the entrance and in fact has 3 layers of roads, the hostel and academic buildings being connected through the famous 94 steps. The institute is equipped with state-of-art computing facilities to compliment classroom pedagogy. The campus is completely Wi-Fi enabled and boasts of 24 x 7 internet connectivity through 8 Mbps dedicated leased line. Outdoor sports facilities include the flood lit sports arena with tennis, volleyball, basketball courts and football, cricket grounds. There also is an indoor badminton court and a scenic jogging track overlooking a pond for the fitness enthusiasts.
