General Information

XAT (Xavier Admission Test), the entrance exam to XLRI (Xavier Labour Research Institute, Jamshedpur] is also the entrance test to be taken by MBA aspirants seeking admission to many other reputed Top B-Schools in the country such as XIM [Xavier Institute of Management] Bhubaneswar, LIBA [Loyola Institute of Business Administration], Chennai, and many other reputed B Schools such as XIME Bangalore.

For more than 50 years XLRI is conducting Admission Test on All India level to select the most appropriate students for management education. Their long experience and the expertise have helped us to extend this test to other Management Institutes. There are 42 other Management Institutes who are selecting students from XAT.

Eligibility Criteria

Various Programmes available at XLRI are:

BM: 2-Year Post Graduate Programme in Business Management.
PMIR: 2 -Year Post Graduate Programme in Personnel Management & Industrial Relations
FPM: 4-Year Fellow Programme in Management.
GMP: 1-Year General Management Programme.

For BM & PM&IR programmes, graduates who have completed three years of Bachelor's degree or equivalent in any discipline recognized by a University or Deemed University are eligible to apply. Those completing their final examination may also apply.

For GMP, minimum 5 years of relevant work experience after graduation (10 + 2 + 3) is required.

For FPM applicants should have a Master' s degree or its equivalent in any discipline, or CA, ICWA, or CS with at least 55% marks (50% for SC/ST candidates) or a BE/B.Tech degree or its equivalent with at least 60% marks (50% for SC/ST candidates).

Exam Pattern

XAT Exam contains 3 Objective type Multiple Choice sections and an essay writing section.

1. Verbal Reasoning (English) - (Objective Type Multiple Choice)
Verbal Reasoning section in one of the recent XAT contained 4 passages for Reading Comprehension; each passage had 3 to 7. Other questions in the Verbal Reasoning section were on Vocabulary, jumbled sentences and grammar.

2. Quantitative Ability and Reasoning (Math) - (Objective Type Multiple Choice)
This section in one of the recent XAT contained questions on functions, trigonometry, coordinate geometry , equations, maxima and minima, and permutation and combination, number system, series, logs, data sufficiency, probability, compound interest, integration and differentiation etc

3. Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning - (Objective Type Multiple Choice)
This section in one of the recent XAT papers contained single & two dimensional data problems. Caselets of DI were based on tables, line graph & pie chart.

4. Essay writing section
Essay topics in one of the recent XAT papers were: "India has the largest pool of talented manpower, but very few innovations and patented products."

Topics covered in GK are mostly from History, Geography, Science, Indian constitution, global business environment, major global events etc., mergers and acquisition, top business executives names who have been in news recently, advertisements Punch Lines, etc.

The test is of multiple choice types which will be of 2 hours duration followed by an essay test which is of 20 minutes duration.

The duration of the test is 120 minutes for the objective type section and an additional 15 minutes is provided at the end of the 2 hours for the essay writing section.
