when is the best time to start prep for CAT?

The best time to start preparing for CAT is anywhere from 6 months to 15 months from date of your CAT. The preparation time depends upon your current status of aptitude when you start preparing for CAT. So an extra ordinary achiver in academics in past might pull off CAT in 6 months where a below average student might take 15 months as he needs to start from very basic fundamentals.

I have a doubt. Do an average student have any chance to crack the CAT and reach one of the IIMs or it is just a propaganda to get more students enrolling with CAT tutoring companies.

Hey Vivek

Your doubt is correct as you see very few average students in IIMs actually. But the CAT tutoring companies are right in their perspective. They definetly can coach you to score over 98-99 percentile in CAT but CAT score is not the only criteria for GD/PI calls and eventually final offers for most of the IIMs. You might be knowing that IIMs have publicly issued their selection criterias this year and that is certainly an eye opener. Except IIM Kolkatta , all other IIMs give very high weightage to your past Academic records or Work experience. (check http://www.topcatcoaching.com/article/article/show/15 ) for detailed analysis of selection criteria adopted by various IIMs.

So , CAT tutoring companies can teach you to score high in CAT but they cant do anything to improve your School or Bachelors marks and hence average students fail to get IIM calls.

pls give explanation for 70/3sec

The answer is 7x10/3 = 70/3

See to strike 4 'Oclock, the pendulum moved 3 times after the first bell. So effectively, it moved 3 times in 7 seconds so that is the speed. (7/3 for one bell)

Now, to strike 11, it would move 10 times after the first bell.

So to move 10 times , it should take 10x7/3=70/3 seconds

Good going Hemant.

Got a question on Average - A bus goes from Patna to Ranchi at the rate of 60 km per hour. Another bus leaves Ranchi for Patna at the same time as the first bus at the rate of 70 km per hour. Find the average speed for the journeys of the two buses combined if it is known that distance from Ranchi to Patna is 420 km

Answer : 64.615 km per hour

Rohit,

The scenario is similar to one bus going at 60KM/hr and coming back at 70 km/hr for the same distance.

So average speed is =2uv/(u+v ) . ( Average speed is harmonic mean of up and down speed)
So average speed= 2x60x70/ 130=64.615 KM/Hr

Note: When the distance traveled is same, the information on the length of distance is immaterial.

For more questions like this, please see the lesson Time, Speed and Distance in Maths Zone.

The best time to start preparing for CAT is anywhere from 8 months to 15 months from date of your CAT. The preparation time depends upon your current status of aptitude when you start preparing for CAT. So an extra ordinary achiever in academics in past might pull off CAT in 6 months ( i.e an IIT top ranker) whereas an average student might take 15 months as he needs to start from very basic fundamentals.

In any case, this is not too early to start. Atleast you can start slowly by taking complete CAT package right now. The package would be valid beyond CAT 2010 so you can study for next 18 months with us.

Thanks Sama,

Hi Saeed

I would just like to add that CAT syllabus as defined is till class Xth so you can start as early as Class X1th :). Remember, CAT is a test of your aptitude not your memory. So you can always start building and developing your start as soon as you get to know about CAT in your life. 18 months is definitely not to early to start so start NOW!
