Your doubt is correct as you see very few average students in IIMs actually. But the CAT tutoring companies are right in their perspective. They definetly can coach you to score over 98-99 percentile in CAT but CAT score is not the only criteria for GD/PI calls and eventually final offers for most of the IIMs. You might be knowing that IIMs have publicly issued their selection criterias this year and that is certainly an eye opener. Except IIM Kolkatta , all other IIMs give very high weightage to your past Academic records or Work experience. (check http://www.topcatcoaching.com/article/article/show/15 ) for detailed analysis of selection criteria adopted by various IIMs.
So , CAT tutoring companies can teach you to score high in CAT but they cant do anything to improve your School or Bachelors marks and hence average students fail to get IIM calls.

Got a question on Average - A bus goes from Patna to Ranchi at the rate of 60 km per hour. Another bus leaves Ranchi for Patna at the same time as the first bus at the rate of 70 km per hour. Find the average speed for the journeys of the two buses combined if it is known that distance from Ranchi to Patna is 420 km
Answer : 64.615 km per hour

Rajani,
Employer often perceive older candidates as more matured to handle managerial positions - this perception only holds true when you have prior work exp before joining a BSchool. The lateral hires in BSchool often ends up with higher pay package than freshers. But older candidates with no prior work exp puts them under serious disadvantage - the idea of wasting a year or 2 for CAT prepartion is really a bad one - better to prepare side by side with your job

@babika
you have to decide whether you want to pursue MBA in India or abroad and also whether you want a 2 year full time MBA or 1 year EMBA
If you are looking for 2 year full time MBA - taking CAT is a must since it opens door to most of the premier B schools in India
For Executive MBA in any of the IIMs you can opt for either CAT or GMAT as both of them are acceptable your 8 year exp makes you eligible for EMBA - please note b schools often take into consideration how many years within your 8 years are managerial.
In most of BSchools abroad you will need official GMAT score along with your essays and transcripts
In India only 3 schools accept GMAT score for their full time MBA
1. SP Jain 2. Great Lakes Chennai & 3. TAPMI Manipal
Apart from that ISB hyderabad offers a 1 year MBA (ranked 15th in FT in global ranking) - they accept GMAT scores only
As for the exam goes CAT is a computer based test and GMAT is a computer adaptive test difference being in GMAT test engine will automatically adjust its difficulty level of questions based on your response to initial set of questions.
Quants are relatively difficult in CAT but 2 essays in GMAT makes it challenging as well. So which one to take will be your call at the end of the day based on whether you want to pursue EMBA or Full time 2 year MBA in India or abroad
