I do believe that IIM-A does have different expectations from candidates in GD.

I heard IIM - A gives lots of importance to literature heavy candidates. For e.g: techie guys are expected to know about different nuances of playwriting etc.

HI Sandy,

GD/PI is a process which happens after the CAT or the relevant entrance exams for most of the MBA colleges across world. The reason is that MBA requires a personality trait to be successful . So unlike engineering and medical exams in India, most of MBA colleges conduct this process before deciding to offer admission to students. Hence it is a very common practise to find that a student with all 7 IIM calls fails to go anywhere.

Thus, it is very important to prepare for it as much as as for CAT and with equal dedication. Also, 2-3 month is not good enough to practise so start giving time for that now.

You can start preparing by looking at the GD&PI section on www.topCATcoaching.com. We expect to put much more content in coming week but it is still enough for you to start.

Happy CAT preparation

Sanjana,

This also varies a lot even within IIM's. It is ranging from 6-9 lakhs for 2 years for most of MBA colleges. Easy education loans are available for most of the top colleges.

Nandini,

This is the perfect time for you to start. You shall be taking CAT'10 so 18 months before, you can start preparation.

You can start by reading newspapers ( to improve your reading speed and general awareness) at least 30 minutes/day.
Secondly, you should immediately buy the complete CAT package of www.topCATcoaching.com and start your course preparation. The advantage here is that your login would be valid till next year so you can prepare at your own pace.

I think doing these two things regularly for next 18 months shall take you through to one of top colleges easily.

Sidharth Sir,

I have a question for Group discussion preparation. How important it is to start preparing now as suggested by you vis a vis doing only in January/Febraury like what other coaching institutes ask you to do.

Hi Sama,

It is much better to start preparinf early and many institutes also advise the same. One on the reasons is that the topics you can get are not going to be limited to events that happened in the last few months-you have to bring in your perspective developed by tracking major events/ GK etc over time. For example, you could get a topic on the Kashmir issue or privatization. The more you have read about such topic and for a greater amount of time, the better you shall do in a GD

For those talking about the IIM-A process, please keep in mind that generally they have a Case Study and not a conventional GD. More details shall soon be available on Case Studies and how to prepare for these on this portal.

Hi Navin,

Different IIMs give different weightages to GDs and Interviews. They also give weightage to parameters such as your Class X and XII results, work experience etc

It is not at all easy to gain admission based on your CAT written exam results.

In fact, for the top IIMs, only 1 out of 4 candidates called for the GDs/ Interviews actually are offered final admissions.

So please work hard for GDs/ Interviews as well!
